ZOMBIES – Fact or Fiction?

Just about everyone has seen or heard the media reports on a new disease called the Zombie Apocalypse. Some people are laughing or at the very least skeptical that such a thing really exists. Teens and young adults are playing video games with zombies in them. Are zombies real, a creation of Hollywood or a rumor that some conspiracy theorist created? Well, for what it is worth we are going to find out and if there is any threat to your health. Forgive me if this article borders on the macabre.
TRADITIONAL ZOMBIE
What is a zombie? The origin of the term zombie is sketchy. The closest earliest term for zombie is ghoul. Apparently around 1929 the term zombie replaced ghoul in the book The Magic Island by W.B. Seabrook. Bela Lugosi starred in a 1932 horror movie called the White Zombie, which was based on Seabrook’s story. The traditional zombie is a fictional creature that is not really dead but looks like he has one foot in the grave. They are typically referred to in horror movies as the “undead.” Hollywood depicts zombies as mindless, resurrected corpses resembling Frankenstein under someone’s evil spell and they like to eat human flesh. Most people have seen, or at least heard of, the zombie classic, The Night of the Living Dead. Apparently, the zombie’s favorite delicacy is the human brain. The origins of the zombie are thought to stem from Haitian Voodoo but according to Voodoo a zombie is not an aggressive monster but a passive victim.
THE NEW ZOMBIE
The term “zombie apocalypse” is a fictional term describing the breakdown in modern society because of an infestation of zombies. Of course this describes a pandemic of zombies in which no continent is untouched. As you can guess, the mass infiltration of zombies is very hostile to human life. The concept of a zombie seems to be a combination of a leper and a vampire because the victim of a zombie attack can become a zombie themselves. If this were the case, can you imagine our military or local police overcome with the so-called “zombie virus?” If this really happened it would lead to a collapse of civilization as we know it. Talk about a zombie plague – hey Wendy; you got any herbs for that?
MIND BENDERS
Just when you thought zombies are right up there with Planet of the Apes, Carleton University in Ottawa presents their 2009 research of the living dead. In their report they call them “slow zombies” representing a slow methodical infestation of the zombie plague. They even went as far to predict a collapse of civilization unless it is dealt with quickly. Their mathematical model recommended offensive strategies rather than quarantine and that time spent on researching a cure would be practically in vain. Apparently according to the researchers, zombies are difficult to neutralize. Well, somebody better inform the Federal Reserve and the IRS because I doubt zombies pay taxes. Can you see the new tax code arguing over what constitutes dead and undead? Get a good lawyer and he could argue that his zombie client is the equivalent of a vegetative state and therefore does not file a tax return. That’s what American needs; different tax laws for the undead. I know this all sounds ridiculous but hang with me. I can’t believe that people actually study this stuff as if it were some scientific law Newton tinkered with. However, if you visit Glasgow University you can visit their Zombie Institute of Theoretical Studies. They largely spoof the subject and have even published a book explaining the scientific explanation of a zombie called Zombie Science 1Z. Now, all we need is a Mel Brooks movie. I can just imagine how Mel Brooks could spoof this. Instead of the Ziegfeld Follies he’d call it the Zombie Follies. Rahm Emanuel would make a great zombie folly manager, don’t you think?
CDC ZOMBIE HANDOUT
In May 2011, the CDC put together a tongue-and-cheek publication on zombies called Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse. The handout covered tips on how to survive a zombie invasion. They thought it was a “fun way of teaching the importance of emergency preparedness.” They put it this way; “So, what do you need to do before zombies… or hurricanes or pandemics actually happen?” They recommend we stock; “food, water, medical supplies and other necessary items prior to all potential disasters; whether they are hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, floods or hordes of zombies.” I like the part where they warn you to get prepared and have enough supplies on hand in case you can’t “locate a zombie-free refugee camp.” The CDC also reassures us that should zombies begin to roam the streets that they would launch an investigation as if it were any other disease outbreak. Sure, send out the disease detectives to find the cure for the zombie outbreak.

ZOMBIE SEARCH
Ok, so the CDC made light of the whole zombie pandemic thing. However, the public is either not buying it or are fascinated with zombies. How do I know that? In June 2012 Zombies were the third most popular search on Google. Why? There have been several unrelated and disturbing incidents reported by the media where cannibalism was mentioned. Are these acts the result of drug use, mental illness or occult activity? Who knows but it just seems bizarre. Referring to the CDC’s suggestions; can a gallon of water per day, sanitation supplies, non-perishable food and medications keep the undead away?
TAKE A CLASS
It is interesting that in Hickory, NC classes were held on how to survive a zombie attack. Yeah, I’m serious. On June 7, 2012 from 6 pm to 9pm at the Holiday Inn in Conover you could have attended a class for $50. The Hickory Daily Record reported on this. Apparently the Glock 17 holds enough rounds to make the undead really dead. The class was taught by Jack Simmons and the tactics taught could be used in any serious invasion. Simmons came complete with zombie targets to practice on.
THERE ARE QUESTIONS
It is kind of hard to take the zombie thing seriously, but what if there were something that could make humans exhibited or manifested strange zombie-like symptoms? We don’t have a doomsday plane to board and withstand any apocalypse. I asked a medical specialist (Rebecca Carley, MD) what could cause such a manifestation of symptoms that would make a person eat someone’s face off. The answer was the rabies virus.
WHAT IS A MODERN ZOMBIE?
According to Dr. Carley the modern zombie is not a reanimated human corpse but is a human that has had their immune system horribly corrupted and their bodies polluted with the rabies virus causing very strange behavior. Good grief! According to Dr. Carley and several news reports, US states are involved in aerial vaccination of the rabies virus. In January 2012 the state of Texas dropped thousands of packets of rabies vaccine to inoculate coyotes and foxes. Officials in Texas have alluded to an urban rabies epidemic. There have been just a handful of human rabies cases reported in the last twelve months nationwide. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services this aerial rabies program has dramatically dropped the amount of rabies cases in two strains of rabies from 144 per year to zero in 2000. So this type of vaccination procedure has been in operation for over a decade distributing over 36 million rabies bait packets each year nationwide. Globally it is over a billion packets. On the US border, Canada is also doing aerial rabies inoculations. You know, it used to be we would see signs that said, “Watch out for falling rock or mud slides.” Now people in urban areas are warned to watch out for falling rabies bait and don’t touch the packets. If you find one in your yard or driveway you’re instruction to contact your local public health officials. Apparently there is a concentration of bait falling from the Texas sky in January when animals are low on food. The USDA Wildlife Services and the National Wildlife Research Center have been researching and planning oral rabies inoculation since the 1970’s. They seem to have it down to a science with manipulating the bait to target different animals; such as coyotes, foxes, raccoons and skunks. The bait packets are the size of a fast food ketchup packet. I guess it wouldn’t be hard to inoculate humans this way. HIGH RISK
Who is at a greater health risk should they come in contact with falling rabies packets? Officials are saying anyone under 18, pregnant women and anyone with a suppressed immune system or who is on immune –suppressant drugs should not touch these rabies packets. The packets can be labeled RABORAL V-RG bait. These packets can also attract domesticated pets. Pet owners be careful as you would also be exposed to oral rabies vaccine through the pet’s saliva. What is in the bait packet? The bait is made of fishmeal and other stuff but the rabies virus is in the plastic sachet (packet) so you should avoid trying to take one of these rabies bait packets from your pet’s mouth. If your pet bites you or his rabies invested saliva gets on you – you will need to seek medical treatment. Health officials say the bait packet is safe to eat for over 60 different species of animals and won’t hurt your dog or cat. But what your pet has already been vaccinated for rabies at the vet’s office? Get this, officials are telling pet owners who call that the bait unit is not considered a vaccination. What??? Yeah, that’s what I’m asking. So, why are they dropping rabies bait packets? Now, I’m wondering if the millions of rabies bait packets are not intended to prevent rabies but to promote rabies. Hmm, is Dr. Carley onto something here? Dr. Carley thinks that humans are being infected this way with a tweaked rabies virus in these packets.
