Cafe Juanita was opened in April of 2000 in Kirkland by Chef Holly Smith who had a great passion for Italian cuisine. Cafe Juanita’s menu changes frequently but the ingredients are mostly fresh and organically grown. Cafe Juanita was first acknowledged for its Best Service by Seattle Magazine in 2006. In 2011 Cafe Juanita received the James Beard Award’s nominee for outstanding Restaurant and chef in the US. In 2012 Holly was nominated again for Outstanding Chef in the US. Cafe Juanita is one of the few places in Eastside (or Seattle as a matter of fact), that deliberately offers gluten free or vegan dishes.

Two of our editors tried the food at Cafe Juanita and they both wrote up their reviews without any knowledge of the comments of the other. In general, both editors found Cafe Juanita a little temperamental. The staff seem nice and attentive, unitl you ask for something outside their comfort zone (like "...can we have a table away from the front door because it is cold"). Then they react as if it is the end of the world and they have a hard time adjusting quickly and gracefully. They just need to be more relaxed and not take things so personal and/or emotional. They seem to be at the edge waiting for a tiny little incident to push them over. They are in the business of taking care of customers and they should not forget that. The food is very nice although that would depend on what you order and what you prefer. For instance, if you like rabbit, then order it and it is great for you most probably. But if you are not sure, and you order the rabbit, then you will probably hate it. If you are not fond of pork, and you are unfortunate enough to sit at a table next to someone who has ordered pork, then you will suffer through your meal with the horrible smell of pork (again if you dislike pork). One of our editors lives on the 93rd Ave., very close to Cafe Janita, and after 3 visits, she wrote a long review about Cafe Juanita. This is simply a restauant that you will either love or not at all. The restaurant seems to be very temperamental and depends on the mood of the staff or the chef - so it appears. You just don't know what you are going to get. One of our editors ordered what she thought to be an interesting Italian desert, and instead she got couple of bicottis and a milk chocolate for $12. Really? Not a home made cake, or a nice Italian desert based on many great recepies of Tuscany or Milano? Couple of biscottis and a - really - milk chocolate? Really? May be we are overly critical. Many people seem to like this restaurant and many of our members have given positive reviews and hence we accounted for those reviews in our ratings below. But somehow there seems to be less room for compromise between likers and not so much likers when it comes to Cafe Juanita. This page (Cafe Juanita) on our site for Cafe Juanita gets about 500+ views per day by our members and our Website visitors. And it seems that many comments we receive is indicative of the two views - like or not like at all. There seems to be nothing inbetween. Interesting. |

Based on our member reviews, this restaurant is rated higher than our editors would have normally rated it. I guess democracy works and we will let majority represent their views. |

Food Quality & Freshness: |
     |
Quality is good as long as you like the food you have ordered but prices seem very high for such small protions. Food seems to come with a high dressing up, unnecessary packaging, and of course a high price. Does it need all that? Can it just be counting on its own merits without the drama? |

Selection & Variety: |
     |
Great selection of organic ingredients and foods that you have been dreaming about for yourself and your family. Wish all restaurants could offer such wide range of food. |

Service: |
     |
Actually service is great, as long as you don't ask for something they don't want to provide. Then you get treated as if you ARE the problem, and get the treatment as if the only problem in the world is YOU. So don't ask, unless you want to get the third degree. |

Atmosphere: |
     |
Small restaurant atomosphere, which can be good actually, but somehow it seems a little less relaxed and less comforting. Are they over compensating for being a small restaurant? Hope not. |

Amenities: |
     |
On a busy night (Friday and Saturdays), parking can be a bit of a problem. The restaurant has tables too close to the bathroom and front door, and one would sympathize for those that get the tables. The staff seem a bit rigid, and we hope they can just be a little more gentle and relaxed. We won't bite, promise. |
